Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 10/01/07

Where have all the grapes gone ? ? ? That is the question that everyone knows the answer to. This is the first year in the history of this winery that we have not crushed grapes. We have made wine from other fruits, but not grapes. So people ask, “What will you do?”, and the answer is live off of our inventory…and pray and work for next year that the harvest will be a very good one. And you know, everything works out in life, it always has for me. Even when things are the blackest, the light will slowly shine until the darkness is not a problem, and is gone.

As we said before, the new plants are ordered, and much work has been done at the vineyard to change over the trellis system, and take out the old dead and damaged vines. There will be some crop next year, but there will be a better crop the year after that, and the years that follow.

It is important that you check your wines that are aging in the cellar. You do not want them to come up with a problem and cause you to lose your vintages. Remember to watch and check the SO2 in the wine, and keep the containers topped up. Air is the one thing that can cause you much trouble, and steal your wine quality.

Many people will lay back their wines for many years thinking that they will just keep on improving. But this is not the case with all wines. Fruit wines are the first wines that you should drink young. They are at their best the first year, and then they start to slide in quality and taste. So enjoy them early. The same is true of white wines. They do not last as long as red wines. So drink them within several months after they are made. But the dry reds need to be laid back for a time to age well and be perfect for a fine meal.

Now that we have all this wine to drink, shall we get started ? ? ? How about your cellar first, we will save mine for last…To Us…
