Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 11/1/03

I would like to tell you about a subject dear to my heart. As many of you know I have a passion for wine history, this led to the founding of the Arkansas Historic Wine Museum, here at the winery. Arkansas has had 149 bonded wineries after probation. However, at this time there are only five.

I spent several days last month traveling the state doing research on some of them, and have gained some very good information and items for the museum. This could not be done if I had not had some leads to people and places. I encourage you to send any information you may have on the Arkansas wine industry to me.

We have added an official library to the museum, with ten feet of book shelves - six foot high, made from lumber from the property. Two different people have given us large selections of books.

The Board of Trustees has been increased to nineteen people from across the state. We have people from Northwest Arkansas to the Little Rock Area. This gives the board a greater depth.

The museum has loaned the Old State House Museum in Little Rock some of our artifacts for an exhibit. Also early pictures of the Cowie winery are on display.

Being one of the smallest museums, we are run on a shoestring. There are no paid employees, and all work is donated. If you would like to send a donation or come by and donate some time, we would be grateful. We are a non-profit 501 (3) C tax exempt corporation. This year the museum was runner up - Museum of the Year by the Arkansas Museum Association.

One other note…We won three gold medals at the Oklahoma State Fair in Oklahoma City. We also won one Best In Show, three gold, eight silver, and two bronze medals at the Arkansas State Fair in Little Rock. Not to bad for this year.

So let's go sample some of the winners…shall we??? And I will tell you some history about Arkansas wineries.
