Notes From the
Vintner
|
Welcome
to our column. We hope that you will return to
learn interesting notes on wine, and related
subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used
for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should
be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body
and lighten the soul. 5/15/05

It is time,
it is time, it is
time
for
a large glass of wine and a bit of rest. The last month was
full of so many activities and things to enjoy. We had three
rows of grapes to plant, and a number of replacement plants
in the current vineyard. The vineyard is 38% larger now,
which means 38% plus more work for this older man.
Then there was the wine competition which was the largest
ever, with 263 entries. It took a lot of work to check in
the wines; invite the judges for a day of judging and a
cookout. Then all the work to type the 203 awards.
But
it was worth all the work. The potluck on Friday
night was a grand hit. We had four area winemaker's visit
and several political office holders. People from several
states were also here, and the patio was elbow to elbow with
people enjoying food and wine. The next day we had a large
number of people show up to try the wines and witness the
awards. Marv Hietpas from WI won the Best of Show ounce
of gold coin.
The next week was spent finishing building the new arbor
and laying the new flagstone. This was to build an exhibit
arbor as stated in a grant that we received for the Arkansas
Wine Heritage Day. Then on May 7th we presented a program on
the grape arbors in the family gardens of Arkansas. We were
presented an old bottle (with a label) that we did not have
from a past Arkansas winery at the Heritage Day. Then the
Founders Award was presented to a person who has been a big
help to the museum.
So, now you have all my excuses why this month's notes were
late
It is now your turn to tell me your
excuses
But before you do, why not let us get
comfortable. I will tell you that you need to check your
grapes several times a week and advise you to get with this
program tomorrow
BUT, now let us have a few glasses of
wine and you can tell me your excuses for not having
everything finished. And after a bit, we can see who cares!
