Notes From the
Vintner
|
Welcome
to our column. We hope that you will return to
learn interesting notes on wine, and related
subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used
for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should
be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body
and lighten the soul. 5/1/02

What a
competition it was !!! There
were 165 entries from all over the United States, and
Canada. And there were 116 winners in all. The quality of
the wines were top notch according to the Chairman of the
Judging. The dry reds and the berry wines lead the classes
with the number of entries. Every one of the classes had
entries. The judges had their work cut out for them.
The afternoon
started on a cloudy note, but the rain held off until the
awards were over, and them everyone regrouped into the
winery as a bit of rain fell. But it did not last long, and
with a little wine drinking
who cared! There were
people here form Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana,
Texas, Oklahoma, California, and Arkansas. This event is
fast growing into a major competition. There were people
here who just wanted to meet the wine makers, and learn a
bit about making the wine at home. They received a good
lesson on home wine making from Howard Warren. He is a wine
maker who has won many awards, and really enjoys his work.
He spoke to the crowd on his way of making wine, and they
enjoyed the talk.
One of the neat
stories of the day was when a guest tasted a dry red wine
while speaking to the wine maker of that wine. He stated
that he had tasted wine from the grapes of that vineyard
before, and asked if the grapes were from Missouri? The
surprised wine makers said yes, and then the person named
the vineyard
and he was correct, Heinrich Grohe of St.
James, Mo. It was a
fun day for all.
So, mark you
calendars for next year
The last Saturday of April at
high noon. Plan on attending and enjoying the fellowship.
Good wines, good people, and good times await you.
So until
then, enjoy WINE ! ! !
