Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 3/01/08

Much to do…The best way to get a project done is to get started, and stick to it. This will work every time, even if there are many bumps in the road. Now we all know that there is much to do now that winter is about over. I look at my list of things to do, and I almost give up. But it has been said, "Be challenged by the things you need to do and remember you have chosen to do them. Don't try to do everything at once." So make up your mind and know that it is time to 'rock and roll.'

The letters have been sent out for the wine competition, and many wines have already made there way here to the winery for the judging. We are well on our way to a great competition. Eight judges have agreed to serve and only a few have yet to respond. The one thing I have not done as of yet is purchase the gold coin. It was $795.00 a few months ago, and I thought it might go down some….WRONG…It is now at over $1,000.00!!! This proves that thinking cannot always be good. But we will have a coin, and everyone will have a great time, as always. So plan on getting your entries in, and then be here for the fun on Friday night and Saturday.

All of my replacement plants have been purchased and will be shipped soon. Then it will take several days work at the vineyard to get it shaped up for spring. We changed the trellis system this year and are replacing two-thirds of the plants with another grape; we will now be growing four types of grapes in the vineyard. There are two grapes for dry wine and two grapes for sweet wine, with more of the sweet wine grapes.

Then there is the new B & B house that is being finished, and the Bell Tower for the winery with a chapel. Just thinking about all this is driving me to drink…Shall we go and have a glass. You can pick the first bottle…
