Notes From the
Vintner
|
Welcome
to our column. We hope that you will return to
learn interesting notes on wine, and related
subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used
for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should
be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body
and lighten the soul. 3/01/07

Never let people know how far behind you are…cause they will only make you feel worse. For example, I was speaking to my oldest son yesterday and told him that I still had not started pruning the vineyard. “WHAT,” he said. “Boy are you really behind! You are always done by now.” Now comments like this do not help the situation at all.
What would have helped is if he had offered to come help, but that did not happen. So now I have reinforcement that I am way behind. Not happy thoughts.
So now with this confession out of the way, I do not feel any better about my being behind in pruning. The truth of the matter is that there are three other things that I am just as far behind in at the present. It makes one think that there is no end to the work, and that the light at the end of the tunnel is the 734 on schedule.
So what is the point??? Well the point of these notes is to remind you that winemaking takes a lot of time and energy, and a vineyard adds to all of this time and work schedule. SO, take some irons out of your fire, prioritize your work, and don’t add new projects until you have half of your current projects finished. This is a pep talk to all those who think that they can do two dozen tasks at one time. The father of my children is like that. So the whole purpose of these notes it to get you to prune your activities so that you will have a bountiful harvest of pride in all that you have done.
Now that the preaching if finished, maybe we should have a couple of glasses of wine before we get started…or better yet, we should get some work done before we enjoy a glass. Now that would be the smart thing to do. I will enjoy a glass with you later after I get some things finished and re-read these notes a few dozen times more!
