Notes From the
Vintner |
Welcome
to our column. We hope that you will return to
learn interesting notes on wine, and related
subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used
for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should
be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body
and lighten the soul. 3/01/06 |
History is important, for it is a point of reference on the road of life… This is my feelings about history, and why I have a love for it. We can study how we arrived and what events played a part in the journey so far to date. And we can study the past to view things about the future. History tells us who we are. Now with all that in mind, allow me to share some good news with you about wine history.
On the 26th of this month, at 1:00 in the afternoon, The Arkansas Historic Wine Museum will dedicate a second museum. This museum will be located at 1503 Central Ave. in Hot Springs, Arkansas. And this is fitting, because Hot Springs had a winery years ago, and it was the home of Professor Joseph Bachman before he died in 1928. This second museum will hold artifacts of Arkansas’s wine history, and tell the story of wine in Arkansas. It is also an important addition to our museum family in that the traffic count for Hot Springs is very high. This will allow more people to learn of the wine heritage of our state.
We, the Board of Trustees, invite you to attend this dedication by Dr. John L. Ferguson, retired State Historian. There will be a short program, light refreshments, and tours of the new museum. The museum will have 14 exhibits telling the story of the importance of wine and the people who made the wine. There were wineries all across Arkansas after prohibition and until World War II, when the men went off to war, and the ladies voted many of the counties dry.
It is easy to see why this new museum is important for many reasons. It is part of the history of our state…which means it is a part of your history. So therefore, it is important to you. Now let us enjoy a glass of wine and talk about history…your history and my history. And by the way, let us bring the bottle…To History ! ! !
