Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 03/1/03

The call to make wine, where does it come from. Who issues the call, and why do you respond? These questions come to mind as I set at the computer to write these notes. Each of us knows that life can be everything we wish it not to be at times. People come and go in our life, and our goals change. What is important today may not be important tomorrow. However there are core values that come from the spiritual side of us that keep us going each day. Life is what we make of it, not what others make of it for us.

Enter wine. Wine is a gift from God, and like all gifts is to be enjoyed, and not abused. Granted that there are those who abuse wine, but the majority of us enjoy wine in the proper manner. It is the appreciation of wine that sparks the interest in making this enjoyable drink. The enjoyment of a good glass of wine sets the stage for the call to make wine. And this call comes from the inside, not the outside. No friend can talk you into becoming a wine maker. This is what you chose to do. From the joy of enjoying wine to the idea of making your own comes from the inside. Once you have desired to make the move to wine maker, no one can change your mind. It is as a calling from the Lord to share in this mystery.

You respond to the call because you know the joy and happiness that come from a glass of wine enjoyed alone or with friends. It can lighten the heart, and place a smile on the face. You answer the call because of all the good things that wine means to you. It creates wonderful memories, and joy in the past…It creates fellowship in the present…And is the promise of unity in the future.

So my fellow wine makers…enjoy your call and treat the calling with great respect, for the calling is from a higher level. A toast, to God, to you, and to me! ! !
