Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 6/01/05

In all things, your glass is half full or half empty… This wise saying applies to each of us. If you are speaking of love, sorrow, happiness or life, it is how you look at life and all things in life that affect you. Nothing is as good as it seems, nor is it as bad as it seems. Therefore, enjoy life, and good wine. Good wine is for you and the ones you care about, while bad wine is for all the others. Now having said all these wonderful things, let us get to the point of this note.

Your outlook in life needs to be up lifting. Do not allow anyone or thing pull you down. This is the time of year that we go into the cellar and see a thousand things to do. So we duck out into the vineyard and they follow us. It was only a few days ago that it was too cold to prune, and now we have so much work to do in the vineyard we believe that we may never get it all finished. I had seven people in the vineyard yesterday working, and I was wondering if we would finish up the project. So I had to step back and look at the glass to know that it was half full.

Go into the cellars and make a list of what needs to be done before the crush. Get the equipment repaired and cleaned for use. Make sure that you have everything that you need for making the wine. Keep your glass half full. Do not put things off to do later, for later is tomorrow. The same thing applies to the vineyard. Get your sprays lined up and spend a bit of time each day checking the grapes and fruit.

This will be my
50th year of making wine. It has been one of the best love affairs of my life. And it is still as strong as it was in 1955, when as a teenager I fell in love with the art of making wine. There will be a party to rejoice, but until then, let us fill our half glass full and toast life, happiness, good friends, and wine. TO US ! ! ! ! !
