Notes From the Vintner
|
Welcome
to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting
notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God
to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be
treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the
soul. 12/01/07

A bit of time for some
fun
As you wind
down from this interesting year 2007; it is time to have some fun. Blending
wine is an art, and it is also just plain fun. The secret of blending wines
is to be open and try many things. The art comes after you have played for
a while and find a blend that could develop into something special. Dr.
Morris of the University is a professional at blending. He will take several
wines and pour some of this one into that one, and some of that one into
another. This is how he finds starting points for the art of blending. The
first part is just pure fun and for enjoyment. I have been with Dr. Morris
several times when he would say, "I wonder how a little of this would
improve the wine?"
Now this is how Katherine's
Delight was created. Two different wines were blended to reach the finished
taste, and then the art kicked in and measurements and amounts were taken
to reach a consistent product. Many wine makers will blend to improve
the main wine. In reality, this is part of the formal art of making wine.
Now it is your turn. Take some
of your wines and a friend and a few glasses. The watch word is to be
different, and try many different things. You do not have to stay in the
same family of wines, nor the same type and color. Have a little sugar
with you so that you can sweeten some of the blends that you make. Dry
wines are great, but sweet sell and make friends. This is a good way to
spend an afternoon. So do not get in a hurry, or think that you have to
come up with the finest wine ever made. Only Christ did that, so spend
time having fun and see what you can come up with as your own creation.
You can even name it after someone special. But make some notes in case
you sample too much and cannot remember how you did it.
All this talk about wine makes
me ready for a glass. How about you???
