Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 12/1/01

Let's give a gift, a gift of wine that is…. After all, it is the holiday season, is it not??? And what better gift than wine for that special person? Good, we have that settled---or do we? Do we give a red or white? Maybe a blush would be better? Do we select a dry, semi, or sweet? Maybe a really sweet dessert wine? Now another question comes up, wine from where? Do we want wine from America, and which America, North or South? And if we say North, and we say the United States…which state do we choose? This is not easy…

And it gets harder …Do we want a native grape, or one that is not? Should the wine be well known, or a different style that is not well known? Do we try to select a wine that we know the person likes, or do we surprise them?

Do we ask for help?… Most of the time this just adds to the mess. When you ask for help from someone, they always chose the one you really do not like. And besides, they are not nearly as smart as you. So with all the decisions that you have to make, do not add to the problem by asking for help.

What else affects this decision?…Is the wine for drinking when you get there? If so you want it to be a very good wine; money is no object if you are going to drink some also. But if you just want to be nice, then a less costly wine will work. It is wise to always plan on getting some of the wine to drink when you are there.

So, lets look at the answer to all the above… I am here to help you! ! !

You select a dessert wine, which is good with a meal or alone. The wine should be from the United States, and it should be from Arkansas. The wine should be one you like. Who cares what they like? Do not let anyone else select your gift. Pick your wine and do not worry about the cost as you are going to drink some. See how easy this is when you know how? ---- ----- ----- And yes, the name of the wine you want is Robert's Port from Cowie Wine Cellars of Paris, Arkansas…Picking wine is a piece of cake.
