Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 8/01/07

Happy Birthday ! ! ! It is the 40 th birthday, and it is time to celebrate. Forty years is a long time. NO, it is not my birthday… I wish, for I was there a quarter of a century ago….It is a birthday that I am happy to be a able to enjoy. On August 17, 1967, Cowie Wine Cellars was born as a Federally Bonded Winery.

So much water has gone under the bridge…so many people have helped in so many ways. My wife and children have helped this baby business grow into a well-known and successful part of the wine history and industry of this wonderful state. There have been a number of people over the years that have been supportive of and to me, and are far too numerous to name. But the special ones know who they are, and they know that I am thankful for their love, friendship, and help. I only regret that my mother, Betty Cowie did not live to watch the winery grow and become the business that it is today. I am sure that she is watching from above.

There is a dream that I had as a young child, and this dream is the one that I am living day by day—to own a winery and make award-winning wines. God has blessed me in so many ways, far more than I deserve. The winery had to prove itself to the community when it started. Wine did not have good reparation in the early days. It was the drink of cheap drunks, but thankfully now it is the drink of responsible drinkers who know the value of a glass of wine. Today, the wines of Arkansas are equal to the best in the world. We have a rich history and a wonderful past to build the future upon.

So HAPPY BIRTHDAY Cowie Wine Cellars; may you enjoy many, many more. Before we go to the small celebration with friends in a few days, would you be kind enough to join me in a glass to the Blessings of God, and to us. May Our God continue to bless all. To us…
