Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 4/1/05

Is it that time again??? Time to go for the Gold….The wine competition is at hand. Just to remind you that the entries have to be at the winery by midnight, April 9, 2005. The panel of judges will arrive at the winery a few days after the wines have arrived. The judges are chaired by Dr. Justin Morris, Director of the Food Science and Engineering Department of the University of Arkansas. The panel of judges come from all parts of the state, and are known for their knowledge of wine.

The top award is an ounce of Gold. There are 23 first place awards that will receive ounces of Silver, and the balance of the awards will be certificates. Last year there were 177 winners in the competition

You never know if you will wine unless you enter. But entering is only half the fun. The fellowship is a part that you do not want to miss. On Friday night, we supply backed hams for pot luck. Then anyone may attend free if they bring a dish, and if a winemaker, a bottle of wine. So then at 5:30 in the evening, we have fellowship, wine and good food. The kind of party that you do not want to miss.

On Saturday, starting at noon the fun begins again. There is a short semmir on winemaking. After this is the awarding of the awards and Gold coin. This is followed by sampling of the wines entered, with cheese, crackers and smiles. This lasts till late into the afternoon.

This event is to promote the art of making wine at home. It is a change to visit with fellow winemakers and to talk shop on the art of making the wine. Many people return year after year. This is a sign of the friendships that have been developed and grown through this event.

So there, you have it… fun days this month. All you have to do is enter you wines, show up, and enjoy. If you win the Gold coin or not…you will be a winner for the fellowship and good time that you will enjoy. Enough reading…are you ready for a glass?…Dry Red you say….Well that sounds fine…to us and all the special people who have entered our life.
