Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 4/1/02

Did I win?? Did I win??? Why silly person, you have to enter first. There is an ounce of pure, yellow, shining gold to be won. The odds are very good; last year they were 1 in 131. The chance to win something last year was better yet…79 in 131. So, silly person, you may win if you enter. Remember that to win in the 18th Cowie International Amateur Wine Competition you must have your entries at the Cowie Wine Cellars by midnight on April 13, 2002. You may enter as many wines as you choose. As they say, the more the merrier.

It will be a fun time in Paris, Arkansas, at noon this month on the 27th. This is the "Big Minute" of the amateur wine competition. All the wine has been judged by the 27th, since it must be entered by the 13th of the month, so all that is left is presenting the awards and tasting the wines. Last year there were 131 wines entered. Now this is too many to taste them all, but what fun to try …

Now, let's talk…the wonderful thing about this competition is the knowledge of home wine making that is shared. This is a time to learn how other people handle their problems in making wine. It is a time to learn how other people make a very good wine. It is a time to learn some of the things not to do. It is a time to grow in your knowledge of wine making.

There are many views on how to make wine, more than there are people who make wine. So you must be able to tell the difference between bragging and knowledge. And some times the line is very thin between them. The best thing to do is to spend some time with the person you are seeking knowledge from about their wine making ways.

It should not take you long to tell if that person is going to help you.

Remember, you do not have to enter wine to come and join the taste…So, for a fun day in PARIS…come to the Cowie International Amateur Wine Competition.

For ALL the details, just click on Events & Dates. I think I may have a glass and check the details…care to join me???
