Notes From the
Vintner
|
Welcome
to our column. We hope that you will return to
learn interesting notes on wine, and related
subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used
for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should
be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body
and lighten the soul. 04/1/01

History Fun
???
Well it can
be, if you are studying it correctly. And correctly is with
a glass of wine. Three out of two history scholars will tell
you that, if asked. The truth of the matter is that Wine is
to be enjoyed, and it can be enjoyed while you do just about
anything. But let's go back to the subject of history---and
wine history to be exact.
On May
5 of this
year, the Arkansas
Historic Wine Museum
is hosting the sixth annual Arkansas Wine Heritage Day. This
event is to educate the public on the history of wine making
in the state of Arkansas. There will be a presentation on
Professor Joseph Bachman, a leading grape grower of
Arkansas in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This event
will allow people to tour the museum (with a glass of wine)
and see items from the wine making past of Arkansas. There
are wine tanks, a 1600-gallon wine cask, presses, filters,
bottlers, and many other interesting things.
Making wine is
a side of life; knowing the history of the art is
another. To understand where we are today in making wine, we
must first study our beginnings in this art. This is the
importance of the Arkansas Wine Heritage Day. Sometimes,
truth in history gets rewritten to suit the people of the
time. This Heritage Day at the museum lays the facts out and
lets the truth fall where it may. This is called HISTORY.
And history is on exhibit in items from many of the former
wineries of Arkansas. Wineries were in the towns of:
Altus, Fort Smith, Conway, Russellville, West Fork,
Monticello, Little Italy, Cotter, and Center Ridge to
name a few.
So plan on coming
to this event starting at noon on the 5th of May. We
are on the north side of Carbon City, three miles west of
Paris, Arkansas. It will be a few hours of learning
experience that may be enjoyed with a glass of wine. You
will leave smarter and happier. History with a
glass
