Notes From the Vintner

Welcome to our column. We hope that you will return to learn interesting notes on wine, and related subjects. Wine is a great gift from God to be used for the enjoyment of man. It is a food, and should be treated as such. It is meant to lift up the body and lighten the soul. 5/01/08

Well it is History, the 24th CIAWC…This was the best competition in our history with over 300+ entries from all over the country. For the awards Barbara and Rex came from California, Raymond and Alma from Kentucky, Marv and Elie from Wisconsin, and Wayne and a friend from Illinois, plus many from Arkansas and nearby states. The potluck was wonderful with much fellowship and wine, commenting the food. The next day started off at noon with a welcome to visitors. Then there was a short talk by Rex and Barbara, the gold medal winners from last year, about their experience of making wine and entering competitions in California. Then the awards were presented to all the winners. After that there was tasting of wines and great cheese and crackers. At supper-time Marv provided a cookout for several (about 40) friends who were still here. Then it was time for the new event--sitting around the FIREPIT enjoying wine and more fellowship. So if this sounds good to you, plan on joining us next year on the last weekend of April for our 25th competition.

Not for an interesting story: Larry Seiter from Conway, Arkansas has about 400 grape vines that he raises to make wine. He has several different grapes for the many different types of wine that he makes. Well last year the freeze got his grapes good, real good. Like most of us commercial vineyards, we were wiped out. He went through his vineyard and harvested enough grapes to make a five gallon jug of wine from all the different grapes. Well, you guessed it…this is the wine that won the one ounce gold coin worth $1,000.00 this year!!! Not many people have a jug of wine worth that much money. So to Larry, "YOU DON' WELL", and we are happy for you.

Now if you would like a glass of cheap wine, lets go to my cellar and enjoy a few.

This is a good story to remember the competition. TO US…and to Larry…….
