This competition has been
held for the last several years to promote the wine and
grape industry of Arkansas. This year, Cowie Wine Cellars
of Paris, the state's smallest winery, won five of the
ten "Best of Show" ribbons, while the states other
wineries won the other five.
Besides the five "Best of Show" ribbons, Robert Cowie won
six Gold Medals, six Silver Medals, and three Bronze
Medals. The wines are judged in a blind taste by two panels
of three judges. The judges of the competition are all
experts in the knowledge of wine from across the state. The
judges never know whose wine they are tasting. After they
taste the wine, they spit it out and rinse their mouth with
water. All the wines are judged and medals awarded if they
are deserving. Then all the gold winners in a class are
judged again against each other, and a "Best of Show" is
selected from all the Gold Medal winners. If there are no
Gold Medals in a class, then there will be no "Best of Show"
for that class. This happened in two classes this year.
